Exploration of ice-margin deposits

High-resolution shallow shear wave reflection seismic field operation.
Rinteln/Porta Westfalica
In the context of paleogeographic research of Saalian, ice-margin lakes, the aim is a detailed reconstruction of the facies architecture and the derivation of lake water levels in the Lower Saxony hills. To achieve this, deposits of glaciofluvial ice-margin systems were investigated by high-resolution, shallow, shear-wave reflection seismic.
Results
By including a great deal of borehole information and other geophysical exploration methods, amongst otherthings we achieve a reference of the methodical capabilities for the detection of relatively thin sediment layers in the difficult Quaternary environment.
Outlook
The new results that show the internal sediment body structures as determined by the shear wave seismic method have given us the mandate to request new research subsidies to extend the investigations to other key sedimentary structures. For further evaluation of the method, it is intended to carry out tests on well-analysed sedimentary structures.
