Geothermal Information System

The German Geothermal Information System, developed within the BMU-funded project GeotIS, offers its users information about deep underground areas in Germany which are possibly suitable for a geothermal use. GeotIS can be seen as the digital variant of a geothermal atlas which is independent of scales and always available in its most actual edition. Geoscientific base data, as well as actual knowledge or results, are provided and continuously maintained. The aim of GeotIS is the offering of decision support for the projection of new geothermal installations, in particular the risk minimisation in finding geothermal resources and drilling locations. The GeotIS data basis allows the quantification of this, as wished by private investors, insurances and public financiers.

The extension of the information system, for example to other geothermal usage systems and areas of interest, is the main topic of the follow-up project GeotIS II.
