Cooperative project Online Seismic Imaging System for Tunnel Excavation

Measurements with the vibrator source system in the Piora adit (CH) (picture: S. Grüneberg).

In the GEOTECHNOLOGIES cooperative project OnSITE, a new Online Seismic Imaging System for Tunnel Excavation with high resolution is in development.

It's major elements are;

  1. modular, adapted for the particular technical and geological situations, non-explosive seismic sources for excitation of compression waves and polarised shear waves,
  2. a quick, wireless data transfer system for simultaneous recording of numerous three-component receivers deployed in rock anchors or  integrated in the tunnel surface,
  3. a software package with modern algorithms for detection and visualisation of fault zones with spectroscopy and ray-beaming techniques, as well as,
  4. an interpretation programme on the basis of neural networks for integrated geological analysis of the tunnel seismic data.

In extensive in-situ measurements at important tunnel construction sites in hard rock (Gotthard base tunnel CH, Katzenbergtunnel at the Upper-Rhine and others) this new seismic system will be intensively tested, adjusted to the technical and logistic requirements of tunnel construction and made marketable - in close collaboration with the industrial partners of OnSITE. In this research project, LIAG and GFZ are developing together high-frequency, seismic vibrator sources in the range from 1 to 10 kHz.
