Shear wave & multicomponent seismics

Technical experiment during vertical seismic profiling (VSP). Left: Tripod rig above a borehole during descent of the geophone tool. Foreground, right: Seismic source system.

The combined utilisation of the information from compressional waves and shear waves are carried out in the multicomponent seismic (3C- or 4C-seismic method). In this, specific parameters of the different wave types are extracted and analysed to derive the elastic parameters of the investigated media and their  spacial distribution.

Research and development concentrates on devices not available on the market, the development of novel measurement and analysis techniques and a specific wave-type adapted interpretation. Focus is on the development of new methods for the utilization of shear and converted waves with special emphasis on geotechnical responsibilities.

Public service orientated applications are e.g. the exploration of utility acquifers, the detection of probable contamination pathways and the analysis of soil parameters, for the estimation of geohazards.
